Teacher Certification

Certification Requirements for teaching chapter 123 (Technology Education) courses include:

(1.) a four-year degree in Industrial Arts, Industrial Technology, or Technology Education with a secondary teaching certification and a passing score on the Industrial Technology ExCET Exam (#30) or

or

(2.) teachers with a current Texas secondary teaching certification (in any area) and a four-year degree may take the Industrial Technology ExCET Exam (#30) (see below) to be certified in Technology Education if they meet the criteria for doing so.

Transition Policy for the Technology Education Certificate:

August 2002-August, 2003 - Individuals seeking the Industrial Technology certificate would pass both the Industrial Technology ExCET in addition to either the Secondary Professional Development ExCET or a new Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) for 8-12, 4-8, or All-Level (the PPRs will be available in Fall 2002). Certified teachers could continue to add the Industrial Technology certificate through certification by Examination only.

August 2003-August 2004 - Individuals seeking the Industrial Technology certificate could use an already passed Professional Development ExCET or a new TExES PPR for 8-12, 4-8, or All-Level and then be assessed by the teacher preparation program on the Industrial Technology requirements.
Certified teachers wanting to add the Industrial Technology certificate would complete an approved teacher preparation program for Industrial Technology. This would also be the last year to issue the Industrial Technology certificate. This arrangement would parallel the way candidates are certified in other Career and Technology areas in which obsolete content tests have been deleted (e.g. Agricultural Science, Home Economics).

(Tenative) September 1, 2004 and beyond - Individuals seeking the Technology Education certificate would pass the PPR, 8-12, 4-8, or All-Level, and the new TExES Technology Education content exam, grades 6-12. Certified teachers could add the Technology Education certificate through certification by examination.

See the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC) Web site for more specific information.
