Specific Documentation Requirements for Interpreters with Emergency Permits

A total of 12 hours of training for each interpreter with an emergency permit must be completed and submitted to TEA. Documentation of fall training (6 hours) must be submitted to TEA Services for the Deaf by December 15 of the school year, and spring training (6 hours) must be submitted by May 15.  Please send copies of certificates and other documents, because they will not be returned.

Training must be related to interpreting for persons who are deaf and must be completed within the school year, which may include the summer, for which an uncertified interpreter has an approved emergency permit.

For each interpreter with an approved emergency permit, the employing district must submit to TEA Services for the Deaf:

A completed Documentation of Training form.
A certificate of attendance with the name of the interpreter, the title of the training session, the date of the training, the total number of hours attended, the name of the presenter(s), and the name of the sponsoring organization; or
A college/university transcript that shows the name of the interpreter, name of the institution, semester attended, course title and hours completed and passed.

In addition to the above, interpreters who have a 3rd year emergency permit must submit:

A completed Documentation of Mentoring form.
Documentation of monthly observations (at least 8 months per school year) and follow-up conferences with a certified mentor interpreter during the school year, or:
Evidence that they took the state or national interpreter evaluation by April 30. All of this documentation is due to TEA Deaf Services by May 15 of the respective school year.

Documentation may be submitted via fax (512/463-9560) or mail (TEA Services for the Deaf, 1701 N. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701).

Failure to submit required documentation by established deadlines may result in revocation of the permit and could affect future emergency permits for delinquent districts.
