The Texas Educator Exchange (TEX) Conference

...sponsored by the Division of Educator Initiatives and Performance at the Texas Education Agency, is a two-day conference designed for statewide teachers, principals, superintendents and teacher preparation programs to share their best practices on emerging issues affecting teacher preparation, teacher retention and student achievement in the classroom. This year’s conference focuses on the role of technology and social media in education and education policy. Invited participants include representatives from teacher preparation programs, educational-related organizations, and other educational leaders.

The conference will be held at the Austin Marriot South on August 3 and 4, 2009.

Registration

There is no fee to attend the conference, but participation will be limited to the first few hundred registrants. If interested in participating, please complete this survey no later than July 17, 2009. Please plan on making your own hotel and travel arrangements. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Austin Airport Marriott South at the state rate of $85.00 per night. Reservations can be made by calling 1(800)228-9290. The Austin Airport Marriott South requires reservations to be made by phone to qualify for the state rate. Refer to the Texas Educator Exchange Conference when making your reservation to receive the state rate.

As blogging becomes more prevalent as a means for teachers to connect with each other outside of the classroom and the state, and for educators and policy advocates to share information and best practices, the TEX Conference is pleased to present featured bloggers Donalyn Miller and Kilian Betlach

Donalyn Miller - Professional Educator, Keller Independent School District

Donalyn Miller teaches sixth grade Language Arts and Social Studies at Trinity Meadows Intermediate School in Keller, Texas. She is the author of The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, published by Jossey-Bass. Her popular blog, The Book Whisperer, provides tips on motivating readers and explores topics of interest to literacy professionals.

Kilian Betlach - Policy & Practice Associate, The Education Trust-West

Before joining EdTrust-West, Betlach taught 7th grade English Language Arts and English Language Development in east San Jose, CA, where he also coached basketball and served as the site representative to the local teacher association. Originally entering the classroom through Teach For America, Betlach taught for six years and earned a Master’s degree in Education Leadership & Administration. He was the founding Institute Director for the Oakland Teaching Fellows, summer training Director for the Oakland City Teacher Corps, and worked as a Professional Learning Community Leader with Teach For America. Betlach wrote the blog Teaching in the 408, twice named one of the top-14 educational blogs in the country by the Washington Post, and twice a finalist for the “best teacher blog” Edublog Award.
