Intensive Reading or Language Acquisition Intervention Pilot Program
The following applicants have been preliminarily selected to receive a grant for the Intensive Reading or Language Acquisition Intervention Pilot Program.
The purpose of this pilot is to provide supplemental, intensive intervention in reading or language acquisition during the school day using neuroscience based, scientifically validated interventions or instructional tools proven to accelerate learning, cognitive ability, and English language proficiency. The target will be K-2 students who are at risk of not passing the TAKS reading assessment in grade 3. Program goals are: 1. Assist qualifying districts or charter schools in increasing the proficiency of students in reading or language acquisition. 2. Assist qualifying districts or charter schools in meeting the grade advancement requirements for reading of the Student Success Initiative. The program will require the use of one of three products vetted by an external review panel and the TEA RFQ process. All program services will be delivered during the school day and will be supplemental to regular classroom curriculum. Programs must address the following standard components: 1. Needs and Objectives—Participating LEAs will develop a plan that includes program objectives that focus on meeting student needs by filling academic gaps in reading or language acquisition. 2. Project Management—The LEA principal or designee must monitor program implementation to ensure fidelity of the intervention and compliance with program requirements. 3. Curriculum and Instruction—LEAs will choose one of three TEA identified programs to implement as an intervention during the 2009-2010 school year and will ensure adequate staffing for implementation. 4. Professional Development—Participating LEAs shall ensure adequate professional development required for effective program implementation and intervention fidelity. 5. Performance Assessment and Evaluation—Participating LEAs must conduct pre-test and post-test assessments using TPRI or Tejas Lee and program benchmarks to measure improvements. LEAs must agree to provide required data to TEA for evaluation.
