Subchapter D. Other High School English Language Arts and Reading Courses


Statutory Authority: The provisions of this Subchapter D issued under the Texas Education Code, 28.002, unless otherwise noted.


110.81. Implementation of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for English Language Arts and Reading, Other High School English Language Arts and Reading Courses.

The provisions of this subchapter shall be implemented by school districts beginning September 1, 1998.

110.83. Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition (One Credit).

(a) General requirements. Students shall be awarded one credit for successful completion of this course. Recommended prerequisites: English II.

(b) Content requirements. Content requirements for Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition are prescribed in the College Board Publication Advanced Placement Course Description: English, published by The College Board. This publication may be obtained from the College Board Advanced Placement Program.

110.84. Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition (One Credit).

(a) General requirements. Students shall be awarded one credit for successful completion of this course. Recommended prerequisite: English III or Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition.

(b) Content requirements. Content requirements for Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition are prescribed in the College Board Publication Advanced Placement Course Description: English, published by The College Board. This publication may be obtained from the College Board Advanced Placement Program.

110.86. International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Studies A: Language and Literature Standard Level (Two Credits).

(a) General requirements. Students shall be awarded two credits for successful completion of this course. Recommended prerequisite: English II. This course is recommended for students in Grade 11 or 12.

(b) Content requirements. Content requirements for IB Language Studies A: Language and Literature Standard Level are prescribed by the International Baccalaureate Organization and in §110.33 of this title (relating to English Language Arts and Reading, English III (One Credit), Beginning with School Year 2009-2010) and §110.34 of this title (relating to English Language Arts and Reading, English IV (One Credit), Beginning with School Year 2009-2010). Subject guides may be obtained from International Baccalaureate of North America.

110.88. Concurrent Enrollment in College Courses.

(a)  General requirements. Students shall be awarded one-half credit for each semester of successful completion of a college course in which the student is concurrently enrolled while in high school.

(b)  Content requirements. In order for students to receive state graduation credit for concurrent enrollment courses, content requirements must meet or exceed the essential knowledge and skills in a given course.

§110.89. International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Studies A: Literature Standard Level (Two Credits).

(a) General requirements. Students shall be awarded two credits for successful completion this course. Recommended prerequisite: English II. This course is recommended for students in Grade 11 or 12.
