TO THE SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT: Student Financial Aid Workshops for Counselors

The Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (TASFAA) will conduct training programs again this fall for school counselors who assist students in seeking financial aid for post-secondary education. Regional workshops lasting approximately four to seven hours in length will be conducted by TASFAA representatives according to the attached schedule.

On Saturday and Sunday, January 13-14, 2001, TASFAA and Texas Association for College Admission Counseling (TACAC) will host the Annual College Information Hotline. The English and Spanish toll-free hotline telephone number is (877) 782-7322 and will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to help families and students throughout Texas find out how to apply for financial aid, learn about their options for funding a college education and receive answers to questions about college admission.

Additionally, the Texas Financial Aid Information Center offers a toll-free call center for students, families, and administrators seeking information about student financial aid. The toll-free number is (877) 782-7322 (same number as the Hotline). Financial aid representatives are available Monday-Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bilingual representatives are also available for Spanish-speaking callers. The call center is a collaboration between the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and is operated by the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) encourages you to take full advantage of this opportunity to provide your counselor(s) with additional training in helping students further their post-secondary education. The TEA also recommends informing parents and students of the availability of the post-secondary information and financial aid toll-free number and Hotline. For further information, please contact your regional education service center or the TASFAA member conducting the training in your region.

Sincerely,
Robert Muller
