TO THE SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT: Student Financial Aid Workshops for Counselors

The Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (TASFAA) will conduct training programs again this fall for school counselors who assist students in seeking financial aid for continued education and training after high school. The training program, consisting of regional workshops lasting approximately four to seven hours in length, will be conducted by TASFAA representatives. The regional education service centers will host many of the workshops. (See attached schedule.)

Students and their families will be able to call One College Information Hotline to get answers about Financial Aid and College Admissions. The TASFAA and the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling (TACAC) will jointly sponsor the Financial Aid and Admissions Information Hotline. The Hotline is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, January 15 and 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The English and Spanish toll-free hotline number is (800) 347-3475. Admissions and Financial Aid representatives from Texas institutions and agencies will be available to help families and students throughout Texas find out how to apply for financial aid, learn about their options for paying for college, and get answers to questions about college admissions.

The Texas Education Agency encourages you to take advantage of this opportunity to provide your counselor(s) with additional training in helping students further their postsecondary education and training. The TEA also recommends informing parents and students of the availability of the financial aid hotline. For further information, please contact your regional education service center or the TASFAA member conducting the training in your region.

Sincerely,
Robert Muller
Associate Commissioner
Continuing Education and School Improvement
