To the Administrator Addressed:

Subject: Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) Video Series in Health & Physical Education

The purpose of this letter is to inform school districts about the new TEKS video series in health education and physical education. The video series is being mailed in October 1999 to each regional education service center, school districts with an enrollment greater than 1,000 students, and university pre-service programs for use in preparing future teachers. Please share this letter with the appropriate person in curriculum and instruction in your district.

School districts not included in the mailing of the video package should contact their regional education service center health education specialist for information related to obtaining a copy of the video series. In addition, copies have been provided to the media library at each education service center. The intent of the videos and accompanying material is to provide a training and informational tool for use in effectively implementing the health and physical education TEKS in the Texas public schools.

Two separate video packages were developed. One video package is related to physical education and the other addresses health education. Within each set you will find:

  • An overview video that includes contemporary thinking in both disciplines, a form showing the organization of the TEKS, and examples of TEKS instruction in the public schools of Texas.
  • Three grade-specific videos (elementary, middle school, high school) featuring TEKS in action.
  • A concisely written manual which includes sample activities for instruction.
  • A resource list which includes sources of information about additional instructional activities and the fundamentals of securing funds for health and physical education programs.

If you have questions about the video series, please contact either Dr. Tommy Fleming, Director of Health and Physical Education at the Texas Education Agency at (512) 463-4326 or Dr. Jim Robinson, Contractor, Texas A&M University at (409) 845-2387.

Sincerely yours,
Ann Smisko
