TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED

Subject: Submission of Year-Round Education Calendar and Related Information

This is a request to identify school districts and campuses that operate a year-round education [YRE] calendar. The YRE calendar is one where school is in operation during the greater part of ten months and up to twelve calendar months of the year. In addition, as a part of the YRE calendar, regularly scheduled intersessions are established throughout the 180 instructional day school year. Districts may use these intersessions for additional educational activities such as remediation and/or enrichment opportunities. Districts that simply have an early beginning date or extended holiday season breaks do not qualify (see indicators 1 and 2 below).

Alternative campuses that operate in excess of 180 school days per year and require all students enrolled in the alternative campus to attend school each day of operation that the students are enrolled should be identified for the purpose of this request as a YRE campus. Districts that are not offering a year-round calendar on any campus for the school year 2000-2001 should disregard this request, with one exception. If your district operated a YRE calendar in 1999-2000 but will not operate it in 2000-2001, please so indicate on the attached information sheet and return it.

The submission of this information is necessary for these reasons: 1) to distribute YRE incentive funds later this school year; 2) to adjust PEIMS submission dates and TAAS testing schedules where applicable; and 3) to gather other information specific to YRE campuses and districts.

The following programs or school calendars do not qualify as year-round education programs:

1. School calendars that begin in early August and complete school in May, but do not have periodic intersessions scheduled as a part of the calendar. Although these calendars operate during each month of the 10 months from August to May, they do not bear any other characteristics of a YRE calendar.

2. Modified traditional calendars that simply provide an extended holiday break during the fall and/or spring semester.

3. Extended year programs (Texas Education Code §29.082) and/or summer school programs that are offered only for certain identified students at the conclusion of the school year;

4. Extended year programs for special education students as defined in Texas Education Code §42.151(k).

If your school district will operate a YRE calendar on a campus, either the entire campus or partial campus, during the 2000-01 school year, please review the samples provided on the attachment and submit the following information on or before October 27, 2000.

· Calendar
Please forward a copy of the district's single track and/or multi-track calendar that has been adopted by the local board of trustees.

· Campus list, approximate enrollment, and other pertinent information
On the attached sheet, please provide all of the information requested.

The completed form should be submitted to the following:
