TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:

The Texas Education Agency, Division of Migrant Education, is pleased to invite those migrant-funded districts that intend to apply for summer amendment monies to implement FY2001 summer migrant education programs, to work with the Binational Teacher Exchange Program. This program gives migrant-funded districts operating Project SMART and other migrant-funded summer projects the opportunity to work with a teacher from Mexico for 6-8 weeks during the summer of 2001.

As in years past, a separate application must be completed by the district and submitted to the Division of Migrant Education by the January 19, 2001 deadline. If approved, the Division of Migrant Education will supply each district through the summer amendment process with $2,000 per each exchange teacher requested to be used toward teacher stipend, materials and supplies associated with the program and other related expenses. The Texas MEP will facilitate the teacher exchange process between your district and the Mexican government. In addition, in April 2001, the Division of Migrant Education will host an orientation meeting in Austin for participating districts.

Timelines related to the Binational Teacher Exchange Program are as follows:

  • Enclosed Binational Teacher Exchange Program application due to TEA/Division of Migrant Education by January 19, 2001.
  • The Division of Migrant Education submits all applications to the Mexican government by January 30, 2001.
  • Summer Amendments due to the TEA-Division of Migrant Education by April 2, 2001.
  • Summer Amendment notification to approved migrant-funded districts by May 1, 2001.

At the start of 2001, we will provide more information regarding timelines and specific schedule(s) to be used for amending your FY2001 Migrant SAS application. However, if you intend to apply for a binational exchange teacher, an application must be submitted by January 19, 2001, to initiate the teacher exchange process.

If you wish more information regarding this exciting opportunity, please contact the Migrant Program Coordinator at your education service center or call the Migrant Division at (512) 463-9067. On behalf of the migrant children of Texas, thank you in advance for your invaluable support and assistance, and the Agency looks forward to receiving your application for the Binational Teacher Exchange Program.

Sincerely,
Carol V. Francois
