TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT: Commissioner's Reading Day

The annual Commissioner's Reading Day will be held February 3, 2000, at the Austin Convention Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Texas Education Agency is proud to be involved in the Governor's Reading Initiative, and I appreciate your support of this important day. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Susan B. Neuman, a professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology in Education at Temple University in Philadelphia. Information on current research in best practices for teaching reading will be shared with participants.

The focus of the Commissioner's Reading Day is reading research and presenters will address in specific terms how information from current research can be applied at the region, district and/or campus level to improve the reading performance of Texas students.

The afternoon will be an interactive session where participants will network with colleagues from other districts to discuss what is working across the state. Topics will include current legislation, and funding opportunities and programs such as Master Reading Teacher and Accelerated Reading Instruction Program.

Please limit representation from your district/organization to two people. Please make your reservations to attend the Commissioner's Reading Day Conference no later than January 19, 2000, by faxing the attached information request. Also enclosed is a list of local hotels for your use. It is recommended that hotel reservations be made as soon possible due to the large number of attendees at this conference.

Let us continue to work together for the success of Texas students, as they become lifelong readers and learners.

Sincerely yours,
Jim Nelson
Commissioner of Education
