To School Administrators

The Administrators' Midwinter Conference on Education will be held January 24 through January 26, 2000 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. The conference will begin on Monday, January 24 at 9:00 a.m. with the Recognition of the United States Department of Education Texas Blue Ribbon Schools and an Update on Legislative Issues. I look forward to serving as the keynote speaker at the opening general session scheduled for Monday at 1:00 p.m. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to the “Dialogue with the Commissioner” later that day, at 4:30 p.m. in Ballroom B/C. The conference will conclude on Wednesday, January 26, at 12:00 noon. The theme of this year's conference is “Bridging the Centuries: The Texas Legacy of Excellence Continues.”

Over 100 concurrent sessions will be presented by districts/campuses implementing
programs and practices that support the needs of administrators and educators. Topics include leadership and accountability, curriculum and instruction, technology, school safety, staff development, community relations, and business and financial issues.

We will also present an ongoing informational area at the Convention Center. Grant
Central Station will provide facts/figures on the 17 new or expanded financial programs supporting state and local initiatives intended to continue to raise student performance. Data Mining will offer a computer lab, Internet access, and e-mail stations. Please check with your e-mail administrator for procedures on how to access your e-mail from an offsite location.

A special feature of the conference, A Closer Look, will take place on Tuesday, January 25 in Ballroom A. At this time, Agency staff will conduct facilitated roundtable discussions and offer participants individual assistance on specific topics. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Center will assist participants with content, implementation, and requirements of TEKS. Tech Tools sessions will provide informal, interactive explorations of products and information needed to educate, to plan, and to learn.

Sincerely yours,
