TO THE ADMINISTRATOR/SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT: Calculators and the TAAS II mathematics assessments at Grades 9 and 10 and Grade 11 exit level

The objectives and student expectations for the new TAAS II assessments have now been distributed to districts and are available on the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website at www.tea.state.tx.us. Evidence from educator surveys and committees suggests that the objectives for the Grades 9, 10, and 11 mathematics assessments will require the use of a graphing calculator similar to the one currently required for the Algebra I end-of-course test. The use of calculators will not be permitted initially on the TAAS II Grade 8 mathematics test. However, a plan is being discussed to include the use of calculators on the Grade 8 mathematics assessment at some time in the future. Information regarding this phase-in of calculator use will be sent to school districts once details of the plan are more fully developed.

When field testing is conducted for the new Grades 9, 10, and 11 mathematics assessments during the 2001-2002 school year, graphing calculators must be made available for student use. Initial field testing will be administered during a three-week window, which will enable students to share a supply of calculators. In subsequent years, however, a sufficient supply of calculators must be available so that each student in Grades 9, 10, and 11 has ready access to a graphing calculator, not only on the day of TAAS II testing, but also for routine classwork and practice.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the success of the students of Texas. If you have questions about the specific types of graphing calculators that may be used, or if you have any other concerns regarding TAAS II, you may call the Student Assessment Division at 512-463-9536.

Sincerely yours,
Jim Nelson
Commissioner of Education
