Action Required

November 19, 1999

TO THE SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSED:

Texas Education Code Section 39.182(a)(4) requires a biennial report that includes an evaluation of the correlation between student grades and student performance on state-mandated assessment instruments. To comply with this statute, the Student Assessment Division is conducting a study correlating student performance in school course work in Algebra I with student performance on the Algebra I End-of-Course test.

The Student Assessment Division has drawn a representative sample of students statewide who participated in the spring 1999 Algebra I End-of-Course (EOC) test. The next step is to match each student's EOC test performance with his or her spring 1999 Algebra I school course performance. Included with this letter are forms which contain the name, PEIMS student id, and spring 1999 campus of each student in your district who is included in the representative sample. A separate form is included for each campus.

Please complete (or have each campus complete) the attached form(s). For each student listed on the form(s), please (1) indicate with a 'Y' or 'N' whether the student has successfully completed and passed ALL of Algebra I by the end of the spring 1999 semester, and (2) enter the student's final spring 1999 semester Algebra I course grade (a score between 0 and 100). If a student was concurrently enrolled in two sections of Algebra I (one for elective credit, one for state credit) during the spring 1999 semester, enter only the final spring 1999 semester grade obtained in the state credit section.

Please be advised that this list of students and each name and PEIMS student id on this list, as well as the names of campuses and districts, will remain strictly confidential. No names of students, campuses, or districts will be reported in the findings of this study. The results of this study will appear in The 1998-1999 Statewide Report of Student Results.

Please FAX or mail the form(s) upon completion. The Student Assessment Division FAX number is 512-463-9302. To protect student confidentiality, please write or stamp "CONFIDENTIAL" on your fax cover sheet or return envelope.

Some districts may prefer to process these data electronically. If so, and if you would like this query on a data diskette or have any other technical questions, please contact Ed Miller by calling the Student Assessment Division at 512-463-9536. If you have any other questions regarding this study, please contact Randy Gesn at 512-463-9536.

This information is needed by December 15, 1999. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Ann Smisko
Associate Commissioner for Curriculum, Assessment, and Technology
