TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT:  New Reporting Format for Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Item Analysis Data

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will continue to provide Texas educators with the same student-level item analysis data that has been provided in the past. However, there will be some changes to the format of the data provided. For the spring 2010 primary administrations of TAKS, the data files received by school districts will indicate by individual student, yes (correct) or no (incorrect) for each item on a given TAKS test. A separate text file will be posted at the same time showing the objective and student expectation associated with each item on the test. The ability to link these two sets of information will permit school districts to analyze this information immediately by individual student as well as aggregate this information by class, grade, campus, district, etc.

In the past, school districts received item-level student performance information after all test administrations, but had to wait until late summer to have access to information that would permit the analysis of student performance by objective and student expectation. This information came too late to inform instruction prior to the retest administrations for grades 3, 5, 8, and exit level.

In summer 2010, campus and district summary reports by objective and student expectation will also be provided at no cost to each school district. In 2011, school districts will be able to access this type of information earlier through the data portal (required under House Bill 3, 81st Legislature) in a more streamlined manner that will not require linking to a separate text file.

Call the Student Assessment Division at 512/463-9536 if you have questions about this information.
