Commissioner Nelson has asked that school districts, professional organizations, institutions of higher education and legislators throughout the state consider
submitting nominations of individuals who are highly qualified, with educational background and experience in the appropriate subject areas and grade levels. Please disseminate
this letter to the appropriate curriculum directors, principals, and/or teachers in your school district. All nominations will be considered when the slate of appointees to the
2000 state textbook review panels is finalized.
State textbook review panel members will be asked to attend an orientation/training meeting in the month of May, June or July. After this meeting, the panel
will remain on-site for a period of three to five days to conduct an evaluation of instructional materials bid and provided by publishers. Persons nominated for service on a
state review panel should be prepared to attend a meeting on-site and to follow state law and State Board of Education rules.
The nomination form is available on the agency web page, www.tea.state.tx.us/Textbooks/. The form may be reproduced as needed, and a
separate form should be completed for each person nominated. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact
Dr. Robert Leos or Leroy Newman in Textbook Administration at (512) 463-9601.
Sincerely yours,
Ann Smisko
Associate Commissioner
