TO THE INDIVIDUAL ADDRESSED:

Subject: Nominations to Year 2000 State Textbook Review Panels

Proclamation 1998 of the State Board of Education calls for bids on new instructional materials to be submitted for state adoption in the year 2000. Your cooperation is requested in helping to identify individuals who can serve on the year 2000 state textbook review panels. State textbook review panel members are charged with evaluating instructional materials to determine coverage of essential knowledge and skills and with identifying factual errors. Panel members play a very important role in determining which conforming and nonconforming instructional materials will be used in the schools for the next few years. Please note the subjects included in Proclamation 1998 and consider individuals who you feel can contribute to the year 2000 state textbook adoption process.

State textbook review panel members will be asked to attend an orientation/training meeting in the month of May, June or July. After this meeting, the panel will remain on-site for a period of three to five days to conduct an evaluation of instructional materials bid and provided by publishers. Persons nominated for service on a state review panel should be prepared to attend a meeting on-site and to follow state law and State Board of Education rules.

In addition to selecting outstanding educators to serve on the panels, I am also very interested in selecting more parents and representatives from the private sector. To this end, please consider nominating parents and business men and women who you feel can play an active role in recommending materials for state adoption. Also, please circulate this letter and form to parents and community groups that may be interested in submitting nominations. Completed printed forms should be returned to Mr. Leroy Newman, Division of Textbook Administration, Texas Education Agency, 1701 North Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78701, no later than January 31, 2000. Additionally, this form is available in the Textbook section of the Texas Education Agency web page at http://www.tea.state.tx.us. It may be completed online and sent to us by e-mail at lnewman@tea.state.tx.us.

The work that each person appointed to a state review panel performs will impact the education of students for years to come. Therefore, I very much appreciate your efforts in helping us to recruit outstanding individuals for service on the year 2000 State Textbook Review Panels. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Robert Leos or Mr. Leroy Newman in Textbook Administration at (512) 463-9601.

Sincerely,
Jim Nelson
Commissioner of Education
