SUBJECT: 2012 Texas Teacher of the Year Program Nomination Guidelines and Application

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will reward and recognize excellence in the teaching profession through the Texas Teacher of the Year Program (TOY). The TOY Program honors excellence in classroom education and provides a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and examples inspire their students, their colleagues and the communities they serve. School districts and open-enrollment charter schools are encouraged to participate in the Texas Teacher of the Year Program to recognize and reward outstanding teachers.

Annually, Regional Teachers of the Year are selected at the elementary and secondary levels for each of the state’s 20 education service center regions. These Regional Teachers of the Year become semifinalists for the state Teacher of the Year competition. From these semifinalists, a state panel selects one Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year and one Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year. One of these two teachers is then selected to represent the State of Texas in the national Teacher of the Year competition.

The Teacher of the Year nomination guidelines and application for 2012 are available on TEA’s website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/toy.html. The guidelines outline the program requirements and contain suggestions for conducting local Teacher of the Year searches. School districts may select their Teacher of the Year through a locally-developed process. Please note that the completed application for each local school district’s Teacher of the Year must be received at the district’s respective regional educational service center no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011 (Central Standard Time) to be eligible to compete for regional and state honors.

For additional information, please contact School Readiness and Partnerships at (512) 463-3070.

Your recognition of outstanding teachers is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert Scott
Commissioner of Education
