TO: Superintendents, Texas School Districts and Charter Schools
FROM: Raymund A. Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education
             Robert Scott, Commissioner of Education
DATE: July 29, 2011
SUBJECT: Implementation of HB 2909, 82nd Texas Legislature, Regular Session

Since 2007, each school district and open-enrollment charter school that educates middle school and high school students has been required to designate one week during the school year as the “Education: Go Get It” Week to inform students of the importance of pursuing higher education.

Most recently, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board engineered the development of a new campaign to increase awareness and build support for the new college and career readiness standards, prepare students for all postsecondary education options, and clarify the application process for postsecondary admission and student financial aid. The higher education campaign, Generation TX (pronounced “Generation Texas”) is a statewide, grassroots movement focused on creating a culture of college and career readiness that leads to the most successful generation in Texas history. All over Texas, students are standing up, finding their voices, and fueling the movement. Equal part inspiration and information, Generation TX supports the state’s higher education plan, Closing the Gaps by 2015.

The 82nd Texas Legislature, Regular Session, approved HB 2909 to rename the week to Generation TX Week. We encourage you to take an active role in providing comprehensive, grade-appropriate information regarding the pursuit of higher education during the month of November to align with similar efforts in other states and to give students time to apply for college and meet financial aid deadlines in early spring. The legislation requires information on higher education options, admission requirements, and scores necessary on recognized assessments be included in the information provided to students. Helpful information and resources are available on the College for All Texans website (http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/) and Generation TX website (http://gentx.org/).

While you face countless challenges and competing demands, we thank you for your commitment to P-16 college and career readiness and to the students of Texas.

Sincerely,

Raymund A. Paredes                                           Robert Scott
Commissioner of Higher Education                       Commissioner of Education
