 TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT:  Energy Conservation Reminder

With the new school year beginning for most schools next week, I wanted to remind you of the importance of implementing energy conservation measures given the forecast for continued record high temperatures.  While it is possible that we could see some slight relief in some areas, temperatures are expected to remain very high across the state.  As I said last week, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) does not expect the start of school to strain the grid beyond its capacity.  However, with continued high temperatures for the coming weeks, it is still important that we all do our part to conserve electricity.

As a reminder, here are some tips from ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission (PUC) for conserving electricity in your schools during the peak hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.:

  1. Set the thermostat two to four degrees warmer than usual and close blinds or curtains on any window that gets direct sunlight.
  2. Turn off all unnecessary lights and electrical equipment when not in use.
  3. Unplug water fountains in the hallways after 3 p.m.
  4. Avoid any non-essential activities that require electricity during the peak hours (i.e. large copy jobs, charging cell phones or laptop batteries, etc.).

We also would encourage you to share unique energy-saving tips with your neighboring districts, regional education service center, or by emailing them to commissioner@tea.state.tx.us. Thank you for all of your hard work and your commitment to the students of Texas. I look forward to the start of another school year and working with you as we continue to build on our past successes.

Sincerely,

Robert Scott
Commissioner of Education
