SUBJECT: 2000 Texas Migrant Education Conference/21st Annual Texas Parent Coordinating Council (TPCC) Conference

The following information on the upcoming migrant education conferences is being provided now to assist you in planning staff development activities during the 2000-2001 school year.

We are pleased to announce that the 2000 Texas Migrant Education Conference is scheduled for November 15-17, 2000 in South Padre Island, Texas, at the South Padre Island Convention Center. The conference theme is An Island of Opportunity: Anchoring Success for All Children.

The conference goal is to continue the enhancement of academic performance of migrant students through reflecting, renewing, and restructuring. The conference also maintains a commitment to the Migrant Seven Areas of Focus and to the statewide initiative focused on effective reading practices.

Highlights of this year's conference includes a wide array of sessions on topics such as highly effective teaching practices, successful migrant programs, identification and recruitment, early childhood programs, and the New Generation System (NGS). The conference will host the annual Exceptional Campus Awards Luncheon, Identification and Recruitment Recognition Ceremony, and Exemplary Migrant Student Recognition Ceremony. A pre-conference session will address the needs of migrant students in secondary education.

We also are pleased to announce the 21st Annual Texas Parent Coordinating Council (TPCC) Conference that will be held February 7-9, 2001, in Odessa, Texas, at the Holiday Inn Center Hotel, 6201 E. Business I-20, (915) 362-2311. For further information on the TPCC Conference, please contact Juanita Ortega-Necer, at the Texas Education Agency, at (512) 463-9067. The conference theme is With Parents…Children Develop/Con Los Padres…Los Hijos se Desarrollan. An information packet will follow at a later date.
