SUBJECT:  Availability of Reasoning Mind program for eligible campuses

The purpose of this correspondence is to notify districts of an opportunity to participate in the Reasoning Mind program and the eligibility requirements for a campus to participate.

The Reasoning Mind program was authorized by the General Appropriations Act, Article III, Rider 56, 82nd Texas Legislature, (2011) and is part of the Student Success Initiative, which provides funding for initiatives aimed at improving student achievement in mathematics and preparing students to meet the Algebra I end-of-course standard.

Reasoning Mind is a nonprofit organization that partners with schools to provide a hybrid of online and face-to-face mathematics instruction with individual attention provided to each student. To learn more about Reasoning Mind visit http://www.reasoningmind.org.

The attached eligibility list includes all campuses that are eligible to apply to participate in this program.  Eligibility requirements are:

  • Campus must serve grades 2-4
  • Campus must serve Title I students
  • District enrollment must be less than 75,000 students
  • 2011 campus accountability rating must be either Academically Unacceptable or Academically Acceptable
  • If 2011 campus accountability rating is Academically Acceptable, the district must reside in one of the following counties:
  • Bell
  • Bexar
  • Collin
  • Dallas
  • Denton
  • El Paso
  • Fort Bend
  • Harris
  • Kaufman
  • Kleberg
  • McLennan
  • Montgomery
  • Nueces
  • Rockwall
  • San Patricio
  • Tarrant
  • Travis
  • Webb
  • Williamson
  • Wise

Campuses must apply to participate in the program due to space limitations. If a campus is selected to participate by Reasoning Mind, the campus will be provided resources and services at no cost to the campus beginning as early as October 2011, and continuing through the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. Each selected campus will receive access to the Reasoning Mind online mathematics curriculum for students in grades 2-4, professional development for teachers serving those students, and on-campus support through monthly visits by qualified intervention specialists.

Districts interested in learning more about participating in the Reasoning Mind program are invited to attend informational webinars held between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., September 21st-23rd and 26th-30th. To apply to participate in this program, visit http://TEAGrant.reasoningmind.org and complete the Reasoning Mind online application no later than September 30, 2011. Campus participation will be based on a first come-first served basis.
