TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:

SUBJECT: Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate Campus Awards for May 2010 Examinations

In 1993, the 73rd Texas Legislature adopted the Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) Incentive Program. One component of the law provides for campus awards of up to $100 for each student who receives a score of three or better on an AP exam or four or better on an IB exam. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) was able to award over $3 million to local school districts for their successes on May 2009 examinations.

Legislation requires that campuses apply to the TEA to receive the campus awards. The agency is currently accepting applications from districts for the 2010 AP/IB exam administration via an online application located at the following link:

https://landry.tea.state.tx.us/tea_survey/aas/CampusAwards2010/CampusAwards2010.htm

To apply for the campus awards, each district with high school or middle school campuses that had students who took an AP and/or IB exam in May 2010 should complete and submit the application
no later than Thursday, June 30, 2011.

In accordance with legislation, these are “school awards” (TEC, §28.053(a)(2)). They should not be held as district funds, but rather distributed to the individual campuses where the award was actually earned. The uses of award funds are to be determined by a campus team established by the principal. The TEA makes payments to districts, not to individual campuses, and it is the district’s obligation to ensure that all monies received are properly distributed to the participating campuses.

Please note that due to budgetary constraints, TEA will not be able to fund campus awards for each student who scores three or above on an AP examination or four or above on an IB examination for the spring 2011 examinations.

If you have questions regarding AP/IB Incentives, please contact Debbie Gonzales, Assistant Director, Advanced Academics/Gifted Education, at gted@tea.state.tx.us or (512) 463-9581.

The growth in AP/IB programs is one of the most notable success stories in Texas education. On behalf of the agency, I commend you on your commitment to high quality education and wish you continued success with AP/IB courses and examinations.

Sincerely,

Anita Givens
Associate Commissioner
